Titandioxid in Kinderzahnpasten in Deutschland

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NP) were hitherto frequently used as an additive in toothpastes and children's toothpastes. However, as serious health consequences cannot be ruled out once the substances have been absorbed into the organism, the use of TiO2 has been heavily criticised. Warnings are especially directed at its use in products for children. Younger children are subject to increased exposure if they swallow toothpaste containing titanium dioxide. In this study, an overview of toothpastes for children available in Germany was compiled to assess the potential risk. To this aim, children's toothpastes were identified online and in stationary shops at the beginning of 2024 and assessed for their TiO2 content. The assessment was repeated online after one year in 2025. In the first survey phase, 41 children's toothpastes were identified, of which 12 pastes (29.3%) had TiO2 as an ingredient in their formulations. In the second survey after one year, this proportion had fallen considerably to 2 out of 41 toothpastes for children (4.9 %). The survey shows that the use of TiO2 as an additive in children's toothpastes has been significantly reduced within a short period of time.
