Preventive strategies include early recall systems, conservative treatment measures and the insertion of space maintainers and primarily serve to counteract orofacial maldevelopment and specifically target at-risk groups. Orthodontic treatment options for secondary crowding include the distalization of posterior teeth and dental arch expansion. If there is pronounced secondary crowding, premolar extraction (e.g., premolars) may be necessary in order to achieve functional occlusion.
