摘要

Acids can affect teeth on a daily basis, but in the case of underlying diseases such as eating disorders or reflux associated with the presence of gastric juice in the oral cavity, the effects of acids can be very severe. Such endogenous acid effects should be considered as the cause of clinically manifest acid-related loss of tooth structure. Diagnosis and treatment should be carried out in conjunction with the appropriate medical specialists. On the dental side, therapeutic strategies include early detection of the lesions and causative acid exposure, dietary advice to reduce additional exogenous acid exposure, treatment with oral hygiene products containing tin and fluoride and, in acute and very advanced cases, covering the defects with dentin adhesives or flowable composites. In very severe cases, restorative strategies may be indicated, but preferably only if the progression of the defects can be at least significantly slowed.
