Zahnärztliche Sanierung in Intubationsnarkose bei Kindern an der Universitätszahnklinik Wien

Background: The reasons for the lack of compliance for dental treatment in children can be the age, negative experiences and fear. If extensive treatment is additionally required, it may be necessary to treat children under general anesthesia (GA).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the use of GA at the University Clinic of Dentistry Vienna, Department of Paediatric Dentistry between 2017 and 2018.

Material and methods: All children treated under GA during the time frame in question were included. The following parameters were analyzed: patient age, gender, caries index, indications for GA, diagnosis and treatment carried out.

Results: A total of 122 patients (mean age 6.3 ± 3.2 years) were treated under GA. In 53.3 % of the cases the main indication was early childhood caries (ECC), followed by molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and supernumerary teeth. A total of 1290 treatment remediation measures were recorded for the patients.

Conclusion: The ECC represented the main diagnosis for GA. This shows the importance of early detection of lesions and the establishment of suitable preventive measures.
