The use of toothpaste to complement toothbrushes has a long history. After the initial use of rinsing solutions, solids became increasingly established until the first toothpaste as we know it today was finally developed in the 19th century. Since then, toothpastes—inseparably associated with mechanical tooth brushing—have become a fundamental pillar of home biofilm control for the prevention of oral diseases. In addition to abrasives/cleaning agents, toothpaste contains ingredients that promote the remineralization of dental hard substances (fluorides) and antibacterial adjuvants (e.g., stannous fluoride, zinc ions). Other active ingredients are intended to support cleaning (e.g., surfactants/detergents/foaming agents). Further ingredients are intended to increase the acceptance of brushing and lead to a fresh feeling after brushing (aroma/flavor/preservatives, colorants/pigments, water). Care should be taken to ensure that certain ingredients such as titanium oxides are not used in children's toothpastes.
