<p>Despite its huge potential for wheat production and availability of improved crop technologies, several technical and socioeconomic factors led to huge yield gaps in the North Shewa Zone of the Amhara region. The research was conducted over two years with the objectives of creating demand, enhancing seed production, and establishing linkages among actors in three districts of North Shewa Zone in the Amhara region. The improved bread wheat varieties (Lemu, Ogolcho, and Senate) with their recommended agronomic package were promoted on a cluster basis in fields through seed distribution, training, field day, and extensive media coverage. The introduced bread wheat varieties gave up to 47% yield advantage over the local checks especially in high vertisol areas. Farmers’ perceptions on the introduced varieties were assessed using the Likert scale and analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques. The major constraints for bread wheat production in the three woredas were identified as the high cost and shortage of fertilizers, the high cost of agrochemicals, the lack of disease-tolerant wheat varieties, and high seed costs. The technological and varietal gap of the introduced varieties was also assessed and found to be 1.7 tons and 1.5 tons per hectare, respectively. The seed produced by farmers was inspected, approved, and collected by local cooperatives for further distribution to farmers with the support of the Regional Government for rehabilitation and development of smallholder farmers in the Amhara region. This study recommended scaling out of improved wheat varieties with associated agronomic management practices; strengthening the seed sector; creating access to inorganic fertilizer at an affordable price; access to rust tolerance varieties; access to affordable improved seed and agrochemicals through local cooperatives or legally registered agro dealers. A frequent regulatory system and follow-up of the agro dealers and other input suppliers must be applied to regulate the price and quality of agrochemicals and seeds.</p>
