Introduction <p>Herbs and spices are strongly aromatic and flavorful ingredients of plant origin. India harbors a plethora of magical herbs and spices that give it a commendable rank in global trading. The diversified climatic conditions that exist in India, ranging from tropical to sub-tropical temperate, facilitate the cultivation of several spices and herbs. However, only a few are generally consumed. The purpose of this review paper is to give a broad account of some major herbs and spices known for treating various ailments.</p> Methodology <p>The methodology of a paper involves systematically searching for, selecting, and critically analyzing existing literature on a specific topic. It includes defining the scope, identifying relevant databases, using specific keywords (<i>Centella asiatica</i> (gotu kola), <i>Ocimum sanctum</i> (tulsi), <i>Pandanus amaryllifolius</i> (pandan), <i>Plectranthus amboinicus</i> (Indian borage), <i>Withania somnifera</i> (ashwagandha), and spices like <i>Curcuma longa</i> (turmeric) and <i>Garcinia indica</i> (kokum)), and employing inclusion/exclusion criteria. The process culminates in synthesizing findings to present a comprehensive understanding of the subject.</p> Results <p>The review focuses on the therapeutic effects of some locally available unconventional herbs, such as <i>Centella asiatica</i> (gotu kola), <i>Ocimum sanctum</i> (tulsi), <i>Pandanus amaryllifolius</i> (pandan), <i>Plectranthus amboinicus</i> (Indian borage), <i>Withania somnifera</i> (ashwagandha), and spices like <i>Curcuma longa</i> (turmeric) and Garcinia indica (kokum). Several clinical and experimental studies have been conducted to elucidate specific pharmacological actions, such as antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects.</p> Discussion/conclusion <p>These pharmacological effects validate the antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, anti-inflammatory effects, cardiovascular benefits, anticancer properties, neuroprotective effects, metabolic regulation, immuno-modulatory potential of the herbs and spices. Apart from safeguarding against regular health concerns, this review also unfolds new avenues for the utilization of such herbs and spices in food formulations for day-to-day consumption patterns.</p>
