Fruit crops and their role in enhancing food security in Ethiopia
摘要
Ethiopia faces significant challenges in achieving food security, primarily due to its dependence on staple crops that are vulnerable to climatic and economic fluctuations. This narrative review examines the role of fruit crops in enhancing food security by diversifying agricultural production, improving nutritional outcomes, and contributing to economic stability. The paper begins with an overview of Ethiopia’s food security situation, highlighting the underdeveloped fruit crop sector and its potential to address food security challenges. The review synthesizes existing literature on fruit crop types, geographical distribution, and production trends, providing insights into their nutritional, economic, and environmental benefits. Key findings indicate that fruit crops can enhance dietary diversity, generate income for smallholder farmers, and improve climate resilience through adaptability and soil health improvement. However, challenges such as inadequate agricultural practices, poor infrastructure, and limited market access hinder the sector’s full potential. The review discusses strategies for overcoming these challenges, including the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, investments in infrastructure, and supportive policies. The study also examines case studies of successful fruit crop initiatives in Ethiopia and compares them with international examples to draw lessons and best practices. Cultural and social factors, including the role of fruits in local diets, traditions, and community well-being, are also addressed. The paper concludes with policy recommendations aimed at enhancing fruit crop production to strengthen food security, along with suggestions for future research to fill existing knowledge gaps. This review underscores the importance of continued investment and support for fruit crop production to ensure a more resilient and secure food system in Ethiopia.
