<p>The pain treatment of geriatric patients poses a major challenge due to physiological and psychological changes per se, but also due to multimorbidity and the associated polypharmacy. The latter harbours an increased risk of unpredictable drug events and interactions and therefore also changes the benefits and risks of pain therapy in old age. Declining liver and kidney functions are of central importance, which is why certain medications cannot be taken at all or only in greatly reduced doses.</p>
