摘要

ECMO therapy is used as cardiac and/or pulmonary organ support to bridge an acute phase of illness in critically ill patients. It usually requires systemic anticoagulation. While unfractionated heparin (UFH) is still the most commonly used anticoagulant during ECMO therapy (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), subcutaneously administered low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) has become established as the primary anticoagulant during ECMO therapy in some centers. Data comparisons from the Medical University of Vienna suggest potential advantages of LMWH over UFH in preventing thromboembolic events and bleeding.
