Severe traumatic brain injury is mainly caused by road traffic accidents or falls. In addition to direct injury to the brain, secondary processes often aggravate the damage considerably. This article describes the causes and possible drug approaches to reduce or treat this secondary damage. It focusses on drugs that are approved for this indication, ubiquitously available, and considered safe and with few side effects.
