Comparative Benefits of Emotional-Facial Stimulation for Hybrid P300 + SSVEP Brain Computer Interfaces

The current research proposes a hybrid BCI that combines P300 and SSVEP brain signals simultaneously. To make the brain respond more effectively in the hybrid P300 + SSVEP BCI, it was proposed to make the visual stimuli appear as human faces. Face-emotional (FE) and no-face (NF) paradigms are employed to induce both P300 and SSVEP cortical reactions. We also looked at a paradigm where visual stimuli that weren’t faces induce SSVEP and emotional faces induce P300. It turned out that the latter paradigm elicited stronger cortical signals, resulting in the system communicating faster and more accurately. The face-emotional-flicker (FEF) paradigm can send data at a speed of 25.4 bits every second and has 95.6% accuracy. The author noted that visual stimuli can differentially modulate brain responses (ERP and SSVEP), thereby influencing how users perceive and interact with BCI paradigms.
