Pharmaceutical, Biomedical, and Biological Implications of Different Grades of Poloxamers

Poloxamers (trade named as Pleuronics, Synperonics or Lutrol) are synthetic triblock copolymers of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polypropylene oxide (PPO) fragments arranged as PEO-PPO-PEO. Based on their molecular weights (ranging from 1100 to 1400) and the ratios of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (from 1.9 to 8.2), they can exist as liquids, pastes and solids which exhibit distinct physiological properties. Different grades of poloxamers (with different molecular weights and PEO/PPO ratios) exhibit unique physicochemical properties, facilitating their use in diverse pharmaceutical, biomedical, and biological implications. The aim of this review is to impart in-depth analysis of physicochemical properties, and biomedical applications of different grades of poloxamers. It also explores their crucial roles in drug delivery, biomedical applications and their impact on biological systems. Meticulous attention has also been given to correlate their structure and properties and their influences for proper selection of poloxamers for their therapeutic and research purposes.
