Investigation of Bioactivity of Boron Oxide Based Phosphate Glasses

摘要

Bioactive glasses have gained significant attention in bone tissue engineering due to their ability to bond with bone and promote regeneration. In this study, a series of glasses were synthesized through the melt-quench method using a muffle furnace with a composition of (80-x)NaPO3–xB2O3–5CaF2–15MgO, where x = 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 mol%. The glasses were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for different durations (3, 7, 14, and 21 days), and their bioactivity was assessed through X-ray diffractogram (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed the development of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and fluorapatite (FAp) on the glass surfaces, indicating bioactivity. The observed decrease in pH after immersion in SBF is likely attributed to ion exchange processes and the growth of apatite layers on the glass surface. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) micrographs showed crystal agglomerates on the glass surfaces, and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) results confirmed the existence of calcium and phosphorus ions. These findings highlight the bioactive properties of the synthesized glasses, suggesting their potential use in bone tissue engineering and regeneration.
