Evaluation of a Novel Wearable Non-Pneumatic Compression Device for the Treatment of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema

This study aimed to assess a novel wearable non-pneumatic compression device (NPCD) for use at home to manage BCRL (breast-cancer related lymphedema), a chronic disease without a cure. Outcomes were measured pre- and post-NPCD use for 5 weeks. Girth measurements and the truncated cone formula assessed limb volume reduction in the upper extremities, hands, and chest. Additionally, hand volume was measured by water displacement. Range of motion was assessed using a goniometer. The Upper Extremity Functional Index (UEFI) questionnaire evaluated upper extremity function, and the Lymphedema Quality of Life (LYQOL) questionnaire evaluated the subject's quality of life. Treatment adherence was also assessed through a daily tracking log completed by the subjects. Improvements were observed in all measured outcomes after NPCD treatment. Chest and hand regions demonstrated a mean reduction after NPCD treatment. Statistically significant improvements were noted in range of motion; notably shoulder flexion, shoulder abduction, elbow flexion, and elbow extension, post NPCD use. Quality of life measured by the LYMQOL showed improvement by 0.56 points after NPCD use, and the UEFI increased by 7.4 points after NPCD use. Additionally, adherence and ADL feedback was favorable. In conclusion, this study underscores the potential benefits of wearable NPCD treatment for autonomously managing breast cancer-related lymphedema, integrating treatment into daily routines, potentially improving adherence, enhancing mobility, and quality of life, while also potentially reducing healthcare costs.
