Chitin Extraction from Lutjanus campechanus for Sustainable Bio-plastic Production (Red Snapper)

Our research project intends to deliver biological plastic using Lutjanus campechanus scales (red snapper) by removing chitin from them and the acquired chitin which is utilized to produce chitosan, a substance that is a mainstay of biological plastic. Chitosan is occurred by following the process demineralization, deproteinization, deacetylation, plasticization. Because the biological plastic created can improve soil fertility and is biodegradable and non-toxic, it can be utilized as an alternative to traditional plastics. The resultant biological plastic has been subjected to extensive testing such as soil test, water test, solvent test to ensure that it meets the required criteria for strength, durability, and other relevant features. The biological plastic created may also be used to make a variety of biomaterials used in the medical profession, such as heart valves, surgical gloves, IV bags, syringes, and much more. However, difficulties with scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ensuring that the process is ecologically sustainable from start to finish may arise. Furthermore, a complete life cycle evaluation is required to determine the entire environmental effect of creating and disposing of bioplastics generated from fish scales.
