A Review of Chlorinated Paraffins: Occurrence in Soil, Regulation and Remediation Technologies

The environmental contamination of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), a widely used industrial compound, is a global concern. CPs can enter and accumulate in soils through several pathways, including sewage irrigation and wet/dry deposition. The concentration of CPs in soil is unequally distributed. A high volume of CPs is accumulated in areas of high human activity or industrialization. In general, congener compounds with short carbon chains and low chlorination exhibit high volatility, leading to significant airborne transport. As more and more attention has been paid to CPs' environmental impacts, several regulatory policies have been released by the government. To advance the development of CPs treatment, a comprehensive review is highly required. The source and occurrence of CPs in soil, relative regulations, current and emerging remediation technologies, such as advanced oxidation, bioremediation, and thermochemical conversion technologies in CPs remediation, were reviewed in this paper. The mechanisms involved in these technologies, such as powerful oxidizing radicals, biological metabolism, and high-temperature-promoted chemical reactions, were also interpreted in detail. Unfortunately, research on remediation technologies for CPs in soil is still lacking. Thermal treatment technology could be a potential solution to effectively remove CPs since it could heat the soil to ultra-high temperatures above 1000°C based on the Joule effect. Future research should be devoted to exploring new and optimal methods to improve the remediation of CPs-contaminated soils on the basis of economic and environmental benefits.
