Investigating links between early instrumental learning and literacy skills development
摘要
Australian national authorities set clear reading competency goals during primary education. The development of reading skills and music training has been linked, with research over the past 15 years reporting improvements in phonological awareness through music interventions. This study investigated such links between instrumental music learning, its duration, and specific reading skills. We administered reading tests to Year 3–Year 6 students and analysed the outcomes against instrumental learning data. The results show advantages for music students in Years 3–4 in one reading category and stronger outcomes for music students in Years 5–6 in four categories versus control. Our findings demonstrate a link between the duration of instrumental learning and development of reading skills, highlighting a benefit from providing early and sustained opportunities for instrumental music learning to all primary age children to support the development of their literacy skills.
