Assessing ecosystem services of urban green spaces of Kano metropolis: A contingent valuation approach

Urban green spaces provide essential ecosystem services that contribute to environmental sustainability, human well-being and urban resilience. However, rapid urbanization in Kano Metropolis has led to a significant reduction in these spaces, threatening the ecological and socio-economic benefits they offer. This study employs the Contingent Valuation Method to assess residents’ willingness to pay for the preservation and enhancement of urban green spaces. A structured questionnaire was administered to 450 respondents, with 333 valid responses analyzed to explore the perceived economic, ecological, socio-cultural, health, and insurance values of green spaces. Findings indicate that respondents are willing to pay an average of $2 monthly for the services offered by ecosystem and enhancement of the urban green spaces in Kano metropolis. Similarly, Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship between income and willingness to pay, with a coefficient of 0.124, implying that higher-income individuals are more willing to contribute financially to green space enhancement and conservation. The study highlights the need for policy interventions to reclaim and expand green spaces in Kano Metropolis, ensuring sustainable urban development and improved quality of life.
