Investigation of enhancing heritage preservation utilizing heritage building information modeling (HBIM)

This study explores the transformative potential of Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) in the management and preservation of heritage structures in Saudi Arabia, particularly in alignment with Vision 2030’s objectives. Leveraging advanced technologies such as laser scanning, 3D modeling, and structural analysis tools, HBIM offers significant advantages in enhancing documentation, conducting comprehensive risk assessments, and implementing sustainable retrofitting strategies. The case study of the Hejaz Railway Station exemplifies the practical application of HBIM, demonstrating its capacity to streamline workflows, improve accuracy, and facilitate data-driven decision-making while preserving historical authenticity. The findings underscore HBIM’s effectiveness in addressing challenges such as structural vulnerabilities, urban development pressures, and environmental risks. However, the study highlights critical barriers, including a lack of skilled professionals, limited stakeholder awareness, high technology costs, and challenges in integrating HBIM with traditional preservation methods. These challenges necessitate targeted interventions, including capacity-building programs, government support through policies and funding, and the establishment of national standards for HBIM implementation. In order to advance heritage conservation through HBIM, this study offers a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration and coordinating preservation efforts with sustainability objectives. Its discoveries show how digital technology may improve conservation practices, guide policy development, and encourage sustainable cultural tourism, all of which contribute to the preservation of the world’s cultural heritage.
