Evaluation of toxic heavy metals and minerals level in the tap and drinking water samples using inductively coupled Plasma-Optical emission spectrometry

Exposure to pollutants in water can lead to a wide range of health problems, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, skin disorders, neurological issues, and gastrointestinal illnesses. Therefore, this study aims to determine the levels of various metals in tap and drinking water samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). A total of 21 tap and drinking water samples were collected from various locations and supermarkets in Dallas to provide a comprehensive overview of water quality across different areas. The samples were filtered and diluted prior to analysis to ensure accurate results. Specifically, all water samples were filtered, diluted twentyfold and analyzed for fourteen metals (Pb, As, Ni, Cd, Zn, K, Mg, Mn, Ba, Sr, Li, La, Sc, and Ti) using standard procedures. The results showed that most of the analyzed metals were present in the tap water samples. Among these, tap water contained relatively high concentrations of potassium (0.037 to 14.51 mg/L), magnesium (0.889 to 8.83 mg/L), and strontium (0.005 to 4.44 mg/L); however, these levels were within the permissible limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory bodies. The finding that most analyzed metals in the tap water samples were within acceptable limits, and that toxic heavy metals such as arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) were either absent or below detectable concentrations, is reassuring. This indicates that, based on the parameters tested, both tap water and bottled water available in Dallas, Texas, meet safety standards established by regulatory agencies. Regular monitoring and testing of water sources remains essential to ensure continued safety. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in this region to assess toxic heavy metals and minerals in drinking water using ICP-OES. In conclusion, these findings provide valuable insights into the current state of water quality in Dallas, Texas, and contribute to ongoing efforts to ensure safe drinking water for the community.
