Ultrasonic extraction for simultaneous dyeing and antimicrobial finishing of cotton fabrics using Ruta chalepensis leaves extract

The growing environmental and health concerns about dangerous synthetic dyes have increased the demand for safe and sustainable alternatives in the textile manufacturing process. This study presents eco-friendly and one-step colouring and antibacterial treatment of cotton fabrics using the extract of fringed rue (Ruta chalepensis) leaves as a natural, non-toxic source of colouring matter. The ultrasonic extraction of ethanol achieved optimum yield at 17 ml per g leaves for 45 min at concentration. Extraction time. The extract from the leaves was applied to cotton cloth by means of an exhaust dyeing technique using citric acid and tannic acid as crosslinking agents. The dyeing was carried out in an IR dyeing machine at 85 degrees Celsius for 60 min with a ratio of 1:10 material to liquor and a dye concentration of 20% (based on the weight of the textile base). Cotton fabrics treated with crosslinking agents have shown good colour strength and fastness characteristics. The antibacterial properties of treated cotton cloth were also assessed using AATCC Test Method 100:2004. Antimicrobial tests revealed potent inhibitory effects against Gram positive and Gram-negative bacteria, underlining the dual-effectiveness of the therapy. The findings thus demonstrate that Fringed Rue leaves extract as a promising natural resource for the environmentally friendly dyeing and antibacterial treatment of cotton fabrics, and promotes sustainable innovation in the textile industry.
