A systematic review of advanced materials for latent fingerprint detection from conventional powders to nanotechnology based approaches

Today, latent finger print (LFP) collection is a fundamental element at every crime scene where there are surfaces from which prints can be lifted, by forensic scientists. Fingerprint is an important field of research in forensic because of its uniqueness. LFP are subject to easy damage and destruction owing to their fragile nature. Various methods have been reported for the development of LFPs on different surfaces in the literature. Powder dusting is a popular method for detecting LFP. Small particle reagent (SPR) is a widely used method for developing LFPs on non-absorbent wet surfaces. Eco-friendly materials can present a challenge to fingermarks recovery due to the variety of physical and chemical properties. Turmeric powder, Imperata cylindrica and fuller’s earth powder was identified has a promising material for the detection of LFP. Nanomaterials also have a significant impact on forensic sciences for the visualization of LFP. Luminescent carbon dot are captivating beginners to this field. The aim of this review is to combine the studies conducted by numerous specialists to identify non-toxic, cost- effective plant powders, food powders and carbon-based powders.
