Exploring biomass pretreatment methods for sustainable biofuel production: a bibliometric analysis

Biofuels offer a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, utilizing renewable biomass feedstocks to meet the growing energy demand while reducing environmental impact. However, the efficiency of biofuel production heavily depends on the pretreatment methods used for conversion of biomass. Analyzing these methods is essential for improving the viability of biofuel production and facilitating their scale-up. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of scholarly contributions to biomass pretreatment methods for biofuel production, covering the period from 2002 to 2023. Articles were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, refined, and analyzed using VOSviewer and MS Excel to explore research trends. A total of 3472 articles were examined to identify publication trends. Using VOSviewer, the leading authors, countries, institutions, and journals were assessed based on the number of published articles and overall citations. The most prolific author was Black A. Simmon, who held the record for the most published articles and citations. The USA ranked first among contributing countries with the highest number of articles, followed by China and India in second and third place, respectively. The most productive institution was the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which had the highest number of publications, while Sandia National Laboratory recorded the greatest number of citations. This study reflects the increasing research interest in ionic liquid based biomass pretreatment methods and emphasizes the need for further exploration in this area to fully understand and optimize these techniques for improving the yield and productivity of biofuels.
