Design of an Arduino-based smart kitchen for the Mauritian elderly
摘要
Smart technology plays a significant role in daily life and is an essential component of smart homes, using artificial intelligence to process and output data. Its adoption across sectors is increasing rapidly, requiring measures to prevent technological gaps between different categories, such as age groups. Often, some benefit from new innovations while late adopters are left behind and may develop technophobia. Globally, more than 46% of seniors face difficulties in daily activities, and Mauritius is no exception, with seniors representing 19% of the population in 2026 and projected to reach 26% by 2040. Although seniors are prone to health decline, they prefer to live independently and continue daily activities, especially meal preparation. This paper presents the conceptual framework and circuitry design of an Arduino-based smart kitchen that enhances seniors’ lives by enabling voice-controlled (Mauritian native language) switching of lights and appliances, monitoring behavior, providing emergency assistance, contacting responsible persons, and ensuring a secure environment.
