摘要

Heavy metal pollution is a growing concern for water pollution and a major threat for wastewater treatment in urban as well as rural areas. Our investigation proposes a nature-based solution in mitigating the effects of harmful pollutants such as Cd, Hg, Pb and Ni etc. Aquaritin heavy metal- a commercially available growth media for selective enhancement of diatoms is a nano-scale formulation containing 13 essential nutrients encapsulated in nano-silica particles, with sizes ranging from 1 to 50 nm. Wastewater samples from Buddha Dariya, a heavily polluted drain, in Punjab showed significant reduction in concentration of heavy metals (Cr, Hg, Pb and Ni) after treatment with Aquaritin heavy metal. The removal efficiency for Pb was 51.5%, Cr reduced by 85.7%, Hg reduced by 97.9% and Ni reduced by 39.5% at 10 ppm concentration of Aquaritin-heavy metal, which were well within the permissible limits by CPCB. The study presents a simple and achievable method to remove toxic heavy metals from the naturally polluted water bodies evaluating a nature-based solution for the removal of heavy metals through the stimulation of diatom growth. As yet no study has reported a commercial product that is economical and can assure and verify substantial decrease in heavy metal concentrations on a field scale.
