Development and Implementation of Online Leadership Modules Enhances Professional and Leadership Skills Among Biomedical Engineering Upperclassmen Mentors

The host institution’s first-year biomedical engineering (BME) course emphasizes teamwork and active learning with weekly laboratory sessions mentored by upperclassmen mentors, called Lab Managers (LMs). The LMs provide guidance on lab equipment usage, background information on course topics, and project management experience. While the LMs were knowledgeable about the didactic information in the first-year course, there was a lack of structured training on group dynamic navigation, conflict resolution, and professional communication.
Novel InitiativeA structured leadership training initiative was implemented in Fall 2023 for LMs (n=25) through 3 to 5-minute instructional videos on seven key mentorship skills, including ethics, technical communication, and conflict management. Fall 2024 LMs (n=16) were given a baseline and post-training quiz, Likert confidence survey, and reflection to assess knowledge retention and the videos’ efficacy. Fall 2023 and 2024 LMs were also given an open-ended post-course survey.
ResultsThe pre-and post-semester Likert surveys indicated an increase in the LMs’ confidence for all leadership modules (p<0.0001), suggesting increased self-perceived proficiency. Multiple choice question quiz results revealed improvement in performance for the conflict management module (p<0.001) while the reflection question quiz showed gains in accuracy for conflict management (p<0.0001), ethics (p<0.05), public speaking (p<0.01), technical communication (p<0.01), and peer review (p<0.05). LMs’ feedback indicates a positive experience with the leadership module, but more interactive components are necessary to improve applicability.
