Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program at the American University of Beirut: An Interdisciplinary Model for Integrated Engineering and Medical Sciences

This study presents the development and evaluation of a joint-governance graduate program in Biomedical Engineering at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Designed through coordinated leadership between the faculties of engineering and medicine, the program integrates clinical immersion, interdisciplinary mentorship, and research-driven learning. It addresses regional challenges in biomedical innovation while offering a scalable framework for institutions, regardless of setting, seeking to bridge clinical and engineering education through collaborative governance and shared infrastructure.
MethodsUsing a mixed-methods approach, we evaluated the program's impact over nine years (2016–2025) through institutional records, alumni surveys, research output databases, and faculty grant data. We assessed graduate career outcomes, research productivity, and interdisciplinary engagement through both quantitative trends and qualitative indicators.
ResultsOver 90% of graduates reported successful employment or academic placement at the time of graduation. The percentage of student-led publications rose from 33% in 2019 to over 50% in 2024. Faculty grant funding shifted significantly toward external sources, driven by collaborative projects across medicine and engineering. Program growth, interdisciplinary course design, and hospital-based training were key contributors to outcome success.
ConclusionsThe AUB Biomedical Engineering Program demonstrates how shared governance and interdisciplinary mentorship can drive sustainable biomedical engineering education in resource-constrained settings. Its integrated clinical and engineering curriculum, along with translational research emphasis, offers a model adaptable to other institutions, particularly in emerging regions lacking standalone Biomedical Engineering departments.
