Biomedical Engineering Innovation, Design, and Entrepreneurship Alliance (BME-IDEA): 20 Years of Impact and Mapping the Path for the Next 20

The Biomedical Engineering Innovation, Design, and Entrepreneurship Alliance (BME-IDEA) was established in 2003 to bring together a community of biomedical engineering educators dedicated to sharing experiences and best practices in teaching design, innovation, and entrepreneurship. In October 2023, the BME-IDEA community gathered together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this impactful organization and discuss future directions. In preparation for the event, stakeholder interviews and surveys were conducted to establish major themes and focus areas for the meeting which included Course Logistics, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and Global Health. These topics were featured in snapshot presentations focused on showcasing best practices and roundtable discussions. The meeting also included a special history of BME-IDEA panel presentation including lessons learned and calls to action. Finally, looking to the future, a brainstorming session was conducted on the topics of the future of BME-IDEA, design project translation and collaboration, and current hot topics (DEI, Generative AI). This white paper is a summary of the workshop and major insights that emerged from brainstorming and discussions.
