摘要

The use of scenarios is indispensable for integrating ethical considerations into research and development contexts. One has to imagine the future technology in envisaged use cases in order to track ethical issues that might arise, and a reflective variation of these imaginations in the form of scenarios is appropriate in the light of high uncertainty. With respect to ethical issues, the focus is often on possible forms of harm and consequently the integration of ethical considerations is undertaken with respect to scenarios of harm or damage. We argue here that this scenario building should be done in combination with technical scenario building. In addition to damage scenarios, technical scenarios should be made that envision ways in which the technical setup of the new technology could lead in specific situations to the envisioned damage. The technical scenarios are based on what we call a “construction model” of that technology. The damage and technical scenarios are then iteratively adjusted, so that mitigatory technical measures are found to address potential harm and technical issues highlight potential new harms.
