摘要

As part of the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project “How is religiosity changing?”, numerous respondents reported on their spiritual, religious, and transcendent experiences. They searched for appropriate words and images to describe what they had experienced, repeatedly resorting to metaphors. This study is therefore to our knowledge the first to use systematic metaphor analysis as a method of the psychology of religion. Using the case studies of a highly religious, a religious, and a non-religious informant, their metaphorical expressions are identified and their metaphorical conceptual ideas with religious (or spiritual) connotations are recorded. In addition, the metaphor-generating schemata are identified, all results are assigned to the dimensions of the operational model of religiosity, and recurring conceptual ideas are bundled into metaphorical concepts.
