Impact of eco-conscious leather manufacturing in Kutch India on sustainable development goals and endogenous regional development for greener future
摘要
The leather craft of Kutch, Gujarat, is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region and a sustainable alternative to industrially produced leather. Known for its intricate hand-punched designs and eco-friendly production process, this craft aligns with the various sustainable development goals. Artisans in this cluster employ traditional practices that prioritize the efficient use of natural resources while minimizing hazardous impact on the environment. The handmade process involves various stages, starting with the ethical sourcing of leather to natural sun-drying, thus reducing energy utilization and dependence on machinery. The qualitative research approach was employed with primary data collection from multi-generational master artisans and their families engaged in the leather craft. The semi-structured interviews, field visit, observation at workshops within a specific cluster was recorded and data was analyzed using the grounded theory. Despite its sustainable approach, the leather craft industry in Kutch currently faces challenges from synthetic leather products, limited education, and restricted access to markets due to digital illiteracy. However, recent initiatives by local non-government organizations and tourism-driven events are supporting the revival of the leather craft in sustainable markets. The findings of this study contribute to sustainable development goals, regional development, and green economies that are contributing in the arid region of Kutch and propose scalable model for eco-conscious and heritage-based manufacturing.
