A critical review of virtual power plants for distributed renewable energy projects in the built environment
摘要
Renewable energy is being used more frequently to combat climate change, and therefore disseminating it is of the utmost importance in order to build a sustainable society. The built environment and the real estate sector are changing as a result of megatrends including urbanisation and climate change. Real estate properties use a lot of electricity, therefore by being nimble with their use, they may contribute to maintaining the power system’s stability. In the energy sector, real estate assets are one of the least researched segments. The purpose of this article is to present how the real estate industry, can help introduce the renewable energy sources into the electrical market using virtual power plants (VPPs) within the Indian context. With the help of VPPs, real estate players can use the opportunity to help the entire energy ecosystem and ensure a sustainable power demand and supply in the electrical market along with the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The article calls for stakeholder collaborations at all levels including the aggregators, distributors, financers, and real estate owners, identifying prospective clients who can be the consumers of the VPP ecosystem and evaluating the technical and financial feasibility of the same. At the same time, the article recommends that if the VPPs are to be successfully implemented in the Indian subcontinent, it is imperative that the value capture and value development of the VPPs must be done by considering the skill development of the stakeholders as well as the policy makers.
