<p>Out of the natural grandeur of the Douro Valley and the human activity that has helped shape it, a productive ecosystem of unique value has emerged. However, the Douro’s natural beauty lies in stark contrast to the profound challenges it faces. Two of the key drivers of the territory’s economic growth—the vine-wine and rural tourism <i>filières</i>—are potentially compromised due to the difficulty of reconciling authenticity (as expressed in <i>terroir</i>, heritage and landscape) with competitiveness (in the face of declining wine consumption, cheap imports and capricious market trends). Drawing on the results of a recent survey of key territorial stakeholders, supported by up-to-date socioeconomic indicators, this article identifies the difficulties that territories such as the Douro face in retaining value-added produced within its own frontiers and the human resources that will be crucial for future development, and delineates priority areas for policy intervention.</p>
