<p>The seed yield and quality of tef is constrained by a number of factors among which inappropriate seed rate and sowing methods for early generation seed production is important factors. Field experiments were conducted to identify seed rate and sowing methods enhancing seed multiplication ratio, seed quality and yield on tef performance in Adet and Sirinka district during 2021- 2022 and 2022–2023 cropping seasons, respectively. Six seed rates (5, 10, 15 20, 25 and 30&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>−1</sup>) and two sowing methods (row and broadcast) were compared. The results of the analysis of variance indicated that for the parameters of days to maturity, plant height, panicle length, seed yield and seed multiplication ratio, the interaction impact of seed rate and sowing method was not significantly (P &gt; 0.05) affected. In this study result, at Adet nitosol and vertisol the highest seed yield (2356.28&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>−1</sup>) and (2112.88&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha <sup>−1</sup>) was obtained in plots seeded with 20&#xa0;kg seed ha<sup>−1</sup>, respectively; it was statistically at par with the seed rate of 15&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>−1</sup>. In both districts seed multiplication ratio improved with decreased seed rates, according to the results. The laboratory experiment revealed that lower seed rate was improved the physical and physiological seed quality traits rather than higher seed rate in the two soil types at Adet and Sirinka districts. It was indicated that the seed samples from different treatments met the minimum requirements for tef early generation seed certification standards of Ethiopia. With lower production costs and higher benefits, the seed rate of 15&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>−1</sup> with row planting produced the most economically desirable yield of early generation tef seed production in the research districts. Thus, it was profitable and advised to plant tef at a seed rate of 15&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>−1</sup>with row planting in nitosol as well as vertisol at the two testing locations and similar agro ecologies.</p>
