<p>The purpose of this study is to analyze the evolution and emerging trends of Sustainable Product Design (SPD) research over the past five decades. The study aims to examine the historical development, thematic structures, geographic distribution, and research trends within SPD research. In this article, we apply bibliometric network analysis and structural topic modeling techniques (STM) to examine SPD research, based on 3,466 Scopus documents authored by 9,833 researchers from 97 countries, spanning five decades (1973–2025). The thematic evolution results show emerging trends in green product design, sustainable development, eco-innovation, and product portfolios. Additionally, the STM analysis highlights the prominent research themes in SPD, with key themes including design, sustainability, and development, design methods and environmental impacts of products. This study holds considerable importance for future scholars and policymakers interested in advancing SPD research and practices, as we analyze the development of SPD over the last five decades and reveal contemporary trends in the wider realm of pro-environmental research.</p>
