Improvement of Circular Economy through the implementation of a sustainable industrial packaging Pool System

This paper presents the findings of a systematic literature review on reusable industrial packaging solutions, with a particular focus on Circular Plastic Packaging Pool Models owned by third-party companies that deliver packaging rental services to the market. These models have gained momentum in recent years due to increasing interest in Returnable Transport Items from an economic, operational, environmental, and legal perspectives; factors that are critical in shaping companies’ decision-making processes toward more sustainable packaging systems versus linear industrial packaging solutions based on single-use packaging alternatives, owned by the companies, that are less efficient and sustainable from an economic and environmental point of view. Despite the existence of several literature reviews on circularity in packaging, recent research has primarily focused on circular packaging solutions for the domestic and end-consumer markets, with limited attention to expanding research on packaging-service systems and pooling models for the industrial sector. A key contribution of this study lies in the categorization and synthesis of the most prominent research domains within the current literature on circular industrial transport packaging. The review highlights its implications across operational efficiency, economic viability, sustainability, eco-design, and regulatory compliance as a guideline for practitioners and policymakers. Furthermore, it identifies promising directions for future research, such as the development of Closed-loop Supply Chains for industrial and commercial packaging, the evolving legal frameworks on reusable industrial packaging in the EU and globally, and the internal decision-making dynamics guiding the adoption of these circular packaging strategies by organizations.
