Regenerative Fruit Waste Upcycling: Transformational Approaches Upcycling Waste to Wealth for Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability

Fruit industry waste (FIW) accounts to more than 42% total food waste and is highly valued for energy production in form of antioxidants, oil, fibers, lipid, proteins, bioactive compounds, colour pigments etc. Waste management with regenerative upcycling approaches indicates sustainable solutions for transforming waste into higher value-added products and also contributes to circular economy. Effective recovery protocols for valorization and upcycling of FIW are assumed crucially important to address environmental issues, increase farm incomes, sustainable production and processing and diversified healthier products to the consumers. FIW has major impact on pollution, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, biodiversity loss and sustainability hence, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 has cited SDG 12.3 compliance with a clear aim to curtail food waste at least to half globally. Developed nations have significantly reduced FIW by effective valorization for high value products, bioactive compounds, functional and nutraceutical food products etc. while developing nations are still struggling with economic, efficient, sustainable and adoptable approaches for FIW management. Poor infrastructure, technical know-how, skilled labour and management policies leads to insufficient supply chain with huge food losses. No country has yet announced halving of food loss thus rendering the targets coherent with SDG 12.3 thus needs attention from both developed and developing countries. The present review aims to concise the information on FIW sources, characterization, utilization, regenerative upcycling and product diversification for sustainable livelihood along with the futuristic approaches to reduce the environmental, economic and nutritional impact of the FIW.
