Circularity Assessment of a Sustainable Modular Building Block and Contribution To SDGs
摘要
In the construction sector, the circular economy presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly concerning waste management, material reuse, and circularity assessment. This study aims to: (i) apply a circularity assessment tool to a sustainable construction block, and (ii) identify Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to the sustainable block studied. The study utilized The Circular Flow Tool to assess the circularity level of a novel block, the CleanTechBlock (a prefabricated modular envelope system) used in European construction projects. It highlighted both internal and external processes, as well as material flows involved in manufacturing the product. Additionally, the study considered the use of materials sourced from renewable and fossil origins and explored opportunities to internalize external flows to enhance circularity and sustainability in social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Furthermore, the study identifies key SDGs related to the case study. This work contributes to informing public policies regarding environmental legislation adoption, aids manufacturers of sustainable blocks by providing a means to measure product circularity and educates consumers on the circular economy’s role in the civil construction sector.
