Purpose of Review

Adhatoda vasica, commonly known as Vasaka, is a medicinal plant widely recognized for its beneficial properties in traditional medicine. This review gives an insight to the phytochemicals, biological effects, and diverse uses offered by Adhatoda vasica in various fields including food applications.

Recent Findings

Various studies have shown the presence of bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic substances, essential oil, etc., that can contribute to its medicinal and biological properties. Adhatoda vasica exhibits variety of biological activities such as antimicrobial, anti-tussive, anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, and antioxidant effects, making it a valuable resource in treating respiratory disorders, skin conditions, cancers, diabetes, etc. Moreover, its extracts are utilized in various sectors, including food systems, packaging, nanoparticle synthesis and herbal formulations due to their functional properties and health benefits.

Summary

Adhatoda vasica contains many functional bioactive compounds and as a result it shows lot of health benefits. Adhatoda vasica research reveals limitations that prevent its wider utilization, including insufficient clinical studies, non-standardized dosages, uncertain molecular mechanisms, challenges with bioavailability, bitter taste, and toxicity concerns. Resolving these gaps with more thorough clinical trials, better formulations, and regulatory compliance will increase its medicinal potential and economic viability. Overall, the current review provided an overview of the potential of Vasaka in multifunctional applications.
