Pullulan as a Biopolymer from Microorganisms: Role in Food Packaging

Purpose

Current investigations in food packaging focus on emerging sustainable and eco-friendly options as substitutes for materials derived from petroleum that inspire the increase of solid waste generation. The review aims to provide valuable insights into the field of biopolymers and sustainable packaging, underscoring PUL’s promising role in meeting the requirements of modern food packaging practices.

Recent Findings

This review article explores the biotechnological processes of PUL production and its structural characteristics, highlighting its suitability for sustainable food packaging materials. Additionally, it investigates the possible uses of films derived from PUL to prolong the freshness of perishable food products, minimizing environmental consequences, and addressing current challenges in the food packaging industry.

The use of synthetic polymers in food packaging has raised environmental concerns, leading to a focus on developing biodegradable and eco-friendly alternatives.
