摘要

This study aims to develop a novel conceptual model by bibliometric researching the literature on the determinants of SMEs expansion, specifically addressing how technological capabilities and innovation interact with agglomeration economies and strategic location. We perform a bibliometric research using a PRISMA-based protocol, leveraging advanced bibliometric tools (Bibliometrix, VOSviewer) to synthesize 293 high-impact articles spanning 28 years (1996–2024). Our analysis culminates in the development of the Agglomeration-Capability-Innovation conceptual model. This model reveals that agglomeration economies act as a critical antecedent, facilitating the development of TCs, which subsequently mediate the relationship between location advantage and SMEs growth via innovation. The main contribution is two-fold: The Agglomeration-Capability-Innovation conceptual model, which provides a validated framework for future research; and the identification of a critical future research agenda. This agenda highlights the urgent necessity for robust, sector-specific econometric and longitudinal analyses to test the causality and dynamic interaction of these factors in emerging economies.
