Leveraging sustainable human resource management in the development of sustainable tourism – literature review and future research directions
摘要
Sustainable Tourism and Sustainable Human Resource Management are critical to the tourism sector. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review to examine how SHRM contributes to achieving ST. Articles published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, with 108 studies selected following PRISMA guidelines based on validity, relevance, and reliability. Findings reveal that existing literature predominantly focuses on green human resource management and environmental performance, while socially responsible human resource management and common good human resource management that promote employee well-being and interest remain underexplored. Consequently, this study first underscores the critical role of human capital in advancing economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable tourism and contributes to understanding how sustainable human resource management as a comprehensive approach encompassing green human resource management, socially responsible human resource management, and common good human resource management, can support tourism sustainability. Furthermore, the review also highlights the challenges faced by tourism employees, which can impede sustainable tourism development. This study thus recommends recognising the synergy between SHRM, decent work, and sustainable employment to help reduce employee challenges and enhance sustainable tourism outcomes. This study, therefore, is one of the few to emphasise the importance of human capital in developing sustainable tourism.
