Investor perceptions and ESG investment behavior in India

ESG investment has become popular across most parts of the world. Investors from different segments are increasingly participating in ESG investments. Therefore, it is important to understand the behavioral factors influencing ESG investment decisions. The present study is focused on studying these biases in Indian context and also understanding the relevance of Theory of Planned Behavior. With the sample size of 400 respondents primarily residing in Delhi-NCR and analyzing it with the help of ADANCO, the study observes the influence of Investment Attitude, Return Expectations, Risk Perception, and ESG Concerns on ESG Investment Intention and in addition to this mediating role of informativeness was studied. The findings established return expectations and risk perception strongly influence ESG investment intention. Informativeness as a mediator reinforces Theory of Planned Behavior, indicating the importance of intent to induce investment. The findings are useful for asset managers and policymakers to not only strengthen the financial landscape but also make the investment process hassle free for the retail investors. The present study contributes to the literature of sustainable finance by gathering evidence from emerging markets.
