Poverty in times of armed conflict: insights from East and West Gojjam zones of Amhara region, Ethiopia

This article aimed to analyze the status of poverty among households during the armed conflict in East and West Gojjam Zones of Amhara Region, Ethiopia. To achieve its objective, cross-sectional household survey was conducted from 1078 rural and urban household. Moreover, ten focus group discussions were conducted. In this study, the situation of poverty was analyzed by using both uni-dimensional and multi-dimensional poverty measures. The findings revealed that the ongoing armed conflict has worsened both uni-dimentional and multidimensional poverty in the study area. Households are experiencing increasing poverty as a result of unstable markets, rising living expenses, and disrupted livelihoods. Therefore, in order to address these effects and guarantee long-term peace and prosperity in the study area, priorities should be given to conflict resolution and peace building efforts followed by development of recovery programs such as reconstruct social services, restore economic stability, and fortify political institutions.
