摘要

This study examines the impact of key macroeconomic factors, including government effectiveness, economic openness, sovereign risk, and economic growth, on tourism development in Vietnam from 1990 to 2023. Situated within the context of Vietnam’s economic transition, the research applies modernization theory and institutional perspectives, utilizing ARDL, ECM, and Granger causality tests to analyze both short- and long-run relationships. The findings reveal that foreign direct investment, trade openness, and GDP per capita significantly promote tourism growth. Conversely, government inefficiency, heightened sovereign risk, and rapid urbanization constrain development. Notably, while urbanization is typically linked with modernization, it poses long-term challenges to tourism sustainability. By addressing a critical empirical and theoretical gap, this study offers nuanced insights into the macroeconomic determinants of tourism in transitional economies. The results provide valuable guidance for policymakers seeking to align economic growth with sustainable tourism development.
