Dynamics of real yield growth in Ethiopia’s smallholder agriculture: the interplay of inputs management and climate change adaptation practices

Unlocking sustained agricultural productivity among Ethiopian smallholders demands a dynamic intervention strategy. The present study based on pseudo-panel data (2003–21) analysed by a system generalised method of moments (GMM) with modified Cobb–Douglas function has revealed the main factors and constraints of agricultural development. Major contributors are found to be improved seed (0.473%), land size (0.3%), and urea fertiliser (0.28%), while land fragmentation (− 14.3%) and DAP fertiliser (− 0.083%) are the most significant factors constraining it. Credit access is one of the factors which immensely benefits output (168.5%). On the basis of these findings, a set of key policy recommendations are proposed: (i) input packages targeted at specific land use; (ii) land consolidation and certification hastened; (iii) more working outs in climate-smart practices; (iv) access to rural credit and financial inclusion improved for the purpose of sustainable transformation and food security.
