Abstract

Strategic communication plays a vital role in supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) by helping educational institutions adopt sustainable practices. This convergent mixed-methods study integrates survey and campaign performance data with focus-group discussions and expert interviews to examine how different communication modes are associated with educational outcomes linked to SDG 4. Guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), the study tested associations among attitudes, subjective norms, communication channels, and student engagement. Structural equation modelling (SEM) and regression analyses revealed that exposure tomulti-channel campaigns was positively associated with approximately 50% higher SDG 4 awareness and higher levels of student engagement. Qualitative themes highlighted context relevance, participatory approaches, and trusted communicators as key factors. Two successful cases. UNESCO’s “World’s Largest Lesson” and Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum illustrate effective practices. The study proposes a practical 10-step strategic communication framework and recommends embedding communication strategies in educational policy, teacher professional development, and media partnerships to support SDG 4 targets by 2030.
