Retraction topography among NIRF-ranked Indian institutions: the other side of the coin
摘要
In academia, publications are considered to be one of the pivotal factors that keep motivating researchers and the research institutions to move ahead. Publications and citations are two sides of a coin. Whereas the Retraction is often associated with concerns related to data, the publication process, and peer review. The present study aims to reveal the state of retraction among the 25 highly ranked institutions listed in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The study encompasses the analysis of the retracted publications from these institutions, identified by the Retraction Watch database, from 2016 to 2025. The insights drawn from the study revealed that the number of retractions among these institutions has been increasing. The Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences was found to be the institution with the highest retraction proportion (1.407). Springer, with 23.92% of papers, was found to be the publisher associated with the highest retraction counts, and the Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems has the most retracted publications, as identified for the present study. Most publications have been retracted due to the investigation initiated by the journals or publishers. Authors from Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia have collaborated more with India. The Correlation between the rank and the retractions is moderately positive. Collectively, the study highlights the presence of retractions across these institutions, with variations observed over multiple analytical dimensions.
