Being a Muslim vegan in Türkiye: a phenomenological analysis of the “Both vegan and Muslim” YouTube video
摘要
This study aims to understand the perceptions, attitudes, opinions, and experiences of individuals in Türkiye who identify as both vegan and Muslim, as well as how they reconcile these two identities. In this context, the study analyzed the video titled “Both Vegan and Muslim”, published on the “Animal Save Türkiye” YouTube channel, in which three women share their perspectives and experiences, using a phenomenological approach. The vegan decisions of the individuals sharing their experiences in the video were influenced by ethical, ecological, and religious values, as well as documentaries, their circles of friends, and feminist thought. They emphasized that the practice of sacrifice is not obligatory and evaluated this issue from a critical perspective. Due to the perceived contradiction of being both vegan and Muslim, they have encountered various social reactions and questions. Due to the limited research on Muslim vegan individuals, this study makes an important contribution to the related literature. However, the nature of the phenomenological approach and the fact that the data were obtained from only one video and three participants significantly limit the generalizability of the research findings.
